Regular oil changes are crucial for maintaining the health and longevity of your vehicle’s engine. The engine is the heart of your car, and oil acts as its lifeblood. Without clean and properly lubricated oil, the engine’s moving parts can wear down faster, leading to costly repairs and reduced performance.

The frequency of oil changes depends on various factors, including the type of oil used, your vehicle’s make and model, and your driving habits. As a general guideline:

  • Conventional Oil: Typically needs to be changed every 4,800 to 8,000 kilometres.
  • Synthetic Oil: Offers extended intervals, usually requiring an oil change every 9,600 to 16,000 kilometres.
  • High Kilometre Oil: Designed for older vehicles, may have different change intervals, often around 4,800 to 8,000 kilometres.

However, always refer to your vehicle’s owner’s manual or consult with our experts for specific recommendations tailored to your car.

Driving conditions play a significant role in determining how often your oil should be changed. Factors like stop-and-go city driving, towing, or extreme weather conditions can accelerate oil degradation. In such cases, it’s advisable to change your oil more frequently, even if you haven’t reached the standard kilometre interval. Severe conditions may call for an oil change every 4,800 kilometres or less.

It is important to keep an eye out for these warning signs which will help you identify when it’s time for an oil change, ensuring your vehicle’s engine remains properly lubricated and functioning optimally. Being proactive in recognizing these indicators allows you to address potential issues promptly and maintain the long-term health of your car.

  1. Dashboard Warning Light: If your vehicle’s oil pressure or oil change indicator light comes on, it’s a clear signal that you should check your oil level and consider an oil change.
  2. Dark, Dirty Oil: Check your oil’s colour and consistency. If it appears dark and sludgy, it’s likely time for an oil change.
  3. Engine Noise: Unusual engine noises, such as knocking or ticking sounds, may indicate inadequate lubrication, which can be a sign of old or contaminated oil.
  4. Decreased Fuel Efficiency: When your engine isn’t properly lubricated, it has to work harder, leading to reduced fuel efficiency.
  5. Exhaust Smoke: Excessive smoke from your vehicle’s exhaust could be a sign of burning oil, indicating oil leakage or oil that needs changing.
  6. Burning Smell: If you notice a burning or oil-like odour inside your vehicle, it’s essential to have your oil checked as it could be leaking onto hot engine components.

Regular oil changes are a fundamental aspect of vehicle maintenance. They protect your engine from wear and tear, extend its life, and improve overall performance. To determine the ideal oil change schedule for your vehicle and driving habits, consult with our knowledgeable technicians at BAC Auto Centre. We’ll help you keep your engine running smoothly and ensure your vehicle stays in top condition.

Jennifer Weber

Had an oil change done yesterday; prompt, fast, fair! What more could you ask for?
What made this a 5 star review is that John gave me great advice about an issue with my Kia Sportage. I still have to follow up with the dealer however John’s advice could well save me thousands of dollars.

Jeff Zabel

I have had my car for over 2 years now and have been going to multiple places for oil changes. This has been by far the best place I have come for an oil change. Dean was extremely friendly and the gentleman who worked on my car showed me one thing that is lose but said it’s not mandatory to fix and will not cause any issues. They did not once push any sale onto me as multiple other places have in the past.
